About Open Sky LIVE

Local weather, explained properly.

Open Sky LIVE has evolved from a simple Pi-based weather station into a hyper-local weather intelligence system for Gants Hill and the surrounding area. It combines live SkyBox sensor readings, public model data, local history, sunrise and sunset timing, moon phase information, and plain-English weather summaries to make local conditions easier to understand.

The aim is not just to show numbers. Open Sky LIVE is built to show what is happening outside, how it is changing, and why it might matter — whether that is rain risk, wind gusts, pressure changes, heat, frost, or unusual local patterns.

Live local sensors

SkyBox readings provide local temperature, humidity and pressure data from the area, giving Open Sky LIVE a real-world local anchor.

Model-assisted context

Public model data is blended with local readings to support wind, rainfall, UV, cloud, sunrise, sunset and broader weather context.

Weather Story

Instead of leaving users to interpret raw charts, Weather Story explains local changes in plain English.

What Open Sky LIVE does now

  • Shows live local weather readings from the SkyBox sensor station.
  • Tracks temperature, humidity, pressure, wind, gusts, rain, UV and cloud conditions.
  • Uses local sunrise and sunset timing to drive the living weather interface.
  • Displays moon phase information with a night-time moon scene.
  • Provides Quick Glance summaries for rain, gusts, UV and daylight.
  • Uses Weather Story to explain what is happening in normal language.
  • Includes a History Explorer for trends, comparisons and CSV export.

How the system works

Open Sky LIVE is built around a local sensor station, known as SkyBox, which sends readings to the Open Sky LIVE API. The website then combines those readings with supporting model data and local history.

The interface is designed to be readable on desktop and mobile. The homepage focuses on current conditions, Forecast explains what may happen next, Wind gives a dedicated wind view, and History Explorer allows deeper investigation.

The system is served over HTTPS and designed to remain lightweight, fast and easy to access from most devices.

Data and attribution

Open Sky LIVE combines local SkyBox readings with selected external model and astronomy data. External forecast and sunrise/sunset data is supported by Open-Meteo. Interface icons are provided by Lucide, and chart rendering uses Chart.js. These tools help power parts of the platform, while the local sensor system, design, history tools and weather interpretation are built specifically for Open Sky LIVE.

Open Sky LIVE is continuing to evolve into a local weather platform that does more than report the weather — it helps explain it.
